Why Would the AARP Endorse ObamaCare Cuts in Medicare? Follow the Money.
Posted by: Meredith Jessup at 3:58 PM
The Chicago Tribune is wondering--what's up with the AARP?  Something must be up:
Why else would the nation's largest lobbying organization, sworn to protect the interests of senior citizens, watch silently as Congress plans to cut Medicare spending by $400 billion to pay for its health reform legislation? Could it be that the interests of seniors and AARP are not exactly aligned?

Let's follow the money. AARP takes in more than half of its $1.1 billion budget in royalty fees from health insurers and other vendors that market services with the organization's name. Medicare supplementary policies, called "Medigap" plans, make up the biggest share of this royalty revenue.

AARP has an interest in selling more, not fewer, Medigap plans, of course. But there is a competitor on the block.  A growing number of seniors are enrolling in a new form of Medicare coverage Medicare Advantage where they don't need Medigap.  Medicare Advantage was created in 2003 to give seniors the option of joining private plans that are paid up to 12 percent more to provide better health benefits than traditional Medicare.

These private plans compete with each other by offering seniors such services as lower premiums, better drug coverage, dental care and eyeglasses, and more comprehensive coverage for major medical expenses. Nearly 11 million of Medicare's 45-million beneficiaries are in the program.

Congress' health reform bills would cut spending for Medicare Advantage by at least $150 billion. President Obama has singled out Medicare Advantage, saying it is a give-away to private insurance companies. But virtually all of the extra money goes back to seniors in the form of better benefits, so it's seniors who have the most to lose.

A Washington Post front-page story on Oct. 27 questioned whether AARP has a conflict of interest in appearing to represent seniors while watching Congress cut Medicare.

"Democratic proposals to slash reimbursements for ... Medicare Advantage are widely expected to drive up demand for private Medigap policies like the ones offered by AARP, according to health-care experts, legislative aides and documents," the Post reported.

Medigap plans are a cash cow for AARP. And if people don't need them because they can enroll in Medicare Advantage plans, that's a revenue loss for AARP.

While the organization has some partnering arrangements with Medicare Advantage plans, they provide a fraction of the revenues to the organization that Medigap does.

Second, if Medicare's benefits are cut by $400 billion or more, seniors will have an ever greater need for Medigap coverage.

"There's an inherent conflict of interest," former AARP executive Marilyn Moon says of AARP's royalty arrangements. "They're ending up becoming very dependent on sources of income."

Tens of thousands of seniors have resigned from AARP, many of them cutting up their membership cards to protest the organization's promotion of health reform.

The new chief executive officer of AARP, Barry Rand, who was a strong supporter of President Obama during last year's presidential campaign, says AARP is not protesting the Medicare cuts because reducing waste and fraud in Medicare will make the program stronger over the long term.

Medicare is in dire need of modernization to make it more efficient, but savings should go back in to making it more solvent. But instead of contributing any savings to the $38 trillion in long-term debt the program is facing, the bills before Congress would use Medicare funds to expand health insurance coverage to working Americans.

While expanding coverage also is a worthy goal, if AARP were representing its members well, it would argue that the money should come from other sources.

It's no wonder seniors are upset. Clearly, the interests of AARP and the 40 million seniors it purports to represent are not aligned in the health reform debate.

Who do they listen to?
Several years ago, I was invited to be interviewed by some Marketing Executive with AARP. I told him plainly that my wife and I had ended our use of their services because we were sick and tired of their parroting the Democrat Party's "fear mongering lies." I explained my knowledge that Republicans advocated cutting the annual increase, and that they and the Politicians were making it sound like what Seniors were currently receiving was going to be reduced.

I said plainly that they should be absolutely non-partisan.

Evidently, my remarks meant absolutely nothing to them. They are still a Partisan Business, engaging in scare tactics to the detriment of Senior Citizens.

I disagree with you.
Healthcare reform is not about 'power'..its about facilitating some sanity in this great country...
in assuring Americans some affordable choices in geting their families covered to access necessary medical care.

PoopMeister,
you're really full of it!

You pinkos want re-destribution of wealth,.....taxing the working class stiff to death so as to give free medical care to lazy, no account, entitlement mentality scumbags.

And of course, those same leeches of society will vote "demo-RAT" for eternity!

You commies aren't as clever as you think.

How very altruistic of you to be that naive.

btw 72 hours to go through the final bill? What ever happened to the 5 day promise? Oh yeah its another lie. Just like a shady salesman, they're trying to cram it down our throats.

Maybe you can answer a Q? Why is it they have committees for both Urban Indians and Native Americans in the Unhealth Bill? And what is the difference. Since Dems are so PC and using the term Indian is now for people from India, maybe its for Slumdog types?

It always chaps my hide that the generation before me never put up a fight against government entitlements more than they have.

As a 55 y.o. the AARP propaganda arrives regularly. It also goes right into the trash just as regularly.

The just shall live by faith. Put your trust in Jesus Christ and get delivered from the fear of death. Protect our freedom of speech so we can exercise our faith in God by rejecting the government trying to take His place.

For I actually served in the army and defended ouw way of life instead of relying on freedoms others provided and then complain about how they did it.PASS THIS AND I TELL YOU NO ONE WHO VOTES FOR IT WILL SURVIVE THE NEXT ELECTION, and it will be repealed as well.

AARP - What a Joke
I just turned 50 this year. AARP does not care about retired people. They are liberal lapdogs who, like Planned Parenthood, only care about the money.

The AARP is a joke. They don't give a rat's patootie about me or anyone else 50 or older. Every piece of mail I get from them is trashed. I have no respect for this organization and every person who has any ties to the AARP or belongs to their organization needs to seriously think about this. AARP doesn't care about your health or providing health care for seniors. All they care about is making money.

Get out of the AARP and save your money.

Just mail back their membership offer with no money included. It costs them postage and wastes their money. If millions did this they would go bankrupt in swift order

All about profits
The AARP is not about standing up for the rights of their members - it is about profiting from them. AARP gets paid (like a kickback) for every service a member uses. If a member buys a health or life insurance plan or auto or home insurance plan the AARP makes money from that. It used to be that you had to maintain a membership to qualify to stay in these insurance programs but since the uproar from AARP making deals with the WH they allow people to cancel their membership but now tell them they can keep the insurance plans - they do not want to lose their kickbacks.
The aarp endorsement of this bill means little since they have few members and they have become as Transparent as the WH.

AARP
I seem to recall AARP used to get a heavy government (taxpayer) subsidy in a regular, annual Congressional appropriation. I wonder if they still get it? If they do, it has to be illegal, in view of their constant involvement in political issues.

I also question their 40,000,000 membership. I don't think they represent nearly that many over 50 people, although I have no way of proving it.

Just like the AMA only represents 17% of doctors, according to the doctors against government controlled health care. Who'd a think it?
Patrice writes: Friday, November, 06, 2009 8:07 PM
United Healthcare scared?
United healthcare is now sending out notices with their annual privacy notices. They have an insert that explains they are not part of AARP, that they only have a business relationship and "income earned from the investment of premiums while on deposit with the Trust is paid to AARP" - this royalty fee is then used by aarp to push their own financial profit making agenda. Anyone who quit AARP but still has these products should contact United Healthcare to transfer into a plan which does not support AARP - it's about time the extravagant building in DC empties out.
